The Media Reviewer #5: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

Hey guys it’s The Media Reviewer. Since Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is released in theaters now I did a poll of which theatrical movie based on a TV show do I review for here and YouTube I did a poll on Twitter and this movie won with the most votes. So let’s dive into Bikini Bottom and start the review. Fun Fact: This was set as the series finale for SpongeBob but as you know that didn’t happen.

The Story

The story is about SpongeBob who wants to be the manager of the Krusty Krab 2 but Mr.Krabs does not think he is ready for a management job and SpongeBob gets upset that he didn’t get the job. But when Plankton brings in plan Z and steals King Neptune’s crown to frame Mr.Krabs and freeze him, SpongeBob along with Patrick goes to shell city to get Neptune’s crown back before Plankton takes over Bikini Bottom and controls everyone in Bikini Bottom. Could SpongeBob and Patrick save Bikini Bottom and try to grow up to become men? Could SpongeBob become manager? Will Plankton succeed into taking over Bikini Bottom?

My Thoughts

The film is really well done for a TV adaptation from a cartoon. I think the story in concept could be a little predictable but in execution the movie gives us some creative story elements with how SpongeBob and Patrick try to get King Neptune’s crown back and try to go through some tough obstacles to get their. It also feels like a movie instead of a 90 minute episode of SpongeBob SquarePants by giving us some really unique plots and settings when they finally go outside Bikini Bottom and we explore what else there is in the universe of SpongeBob when the main characters go do crazy things so they could accomplish their goal. The movie is also pretty emotional and gives us some heart warming moments from the characters. This is also a comedy and the movie has some memorable jokes and moments from the film that I still remembered to this day and other audiences members remember. The Animation of the film is a huge upgrade from the TV series and looks really well done for a theatrical film. Sure in a few scenes it could have that TV quality animation but for the most part the movie gives out creative and really well done character designs along with really well done backgrounds like Bikini Bottom, The trench, and other settings in the film. By the way there are the live acttion scenes and they look well done like Shell City and the beach where David Hasselhoff is. The character animation is also really impressive and have its creative moments with the characters movements with really trippy moments as well. The animation overall is really well done for SpongeBob. Most of the characters are pretty good although some characters are wasted like Mr.Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, and etc. The main characters like SpongeBob and Patrick work well together as main protagonists but could be a bit annoying at times when they cry and whine. King Neptune has his enjoyable moments and funny bald jokes but I don’t know why they did not use King Neptune from the TV series even though I like this one better. Mindy is the daughter of Neptune and she is a good opposite of Neptune witch she is compassionate of others and has faith in SpongeBob and Patrick to get his crown back while Neptune is strict and has no faith in SpongeBob while he only thinks to imprison people and kill people who are a threat to him. Plankton could be a threatening main antagonist and has pretty funny moments but we could’ve had him team up with all the other main antagonists from the SpongeBob series but he is still threatening. Dennis also works for Plankton but he is underused in most scenes. The voice actors do a nice job in playing their characters like Tom Kenny brings his charm as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick is funny, Scarlett Johansson as Mindy does a good job playing her compassionate character, Jeffery Tambor is entertaining as King Neptune, Adam Baldwin as Dennis does a pretty good job playing the tough guy, and Mr. Lawrence is really good as Plankton. The voice acting is great overall. This movie is pretty good even though it has a few problems this movie is pretty good with a nice story, good animation, good characters, and great voice acting.

So overall I’d give this movie a:

Reel Recommendation
